Rescue Pictures 2/26/2009 : Girl, 16, jumps off cliffs in San Pedro as police talk to her A 16-year-old girl survived an apparent suicide attempt this afternoon after she jumped from the cliffs of San Pedro just before 1 p.m. According to witness accounts, the girl's mother knew she was contemplating suicide and called police. When Los Angeles police officers arrived on the scene and made contact with her, the girl jumped, according to former Daily Breeze reporter Diana Chapman who spoke with the police captain at the scene. Chapman was driving by the area and stopped when she saw the commotion. "She wanted to kill herself and the mom knew that and called the police," Chapman said. "She then jumped." Emergency crews were trying to bring the victim to the top of the cliffs near Royal Palms Beach. Helicopters appeared to be having trouble finding a good angle, Chapman said. Emergency workers surrounded the victim who was still lying at the bottom. Plans were to transfer her to County Harbor-UCLA hospital. No other information, including the victim's identity or city of residence, was released.

Rescue Pictures 3/28/2008 : Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a 7:55 a.m. call reporting the body near the 900 block of Paseo Del Mar, which was closed to traffic, said fire spokesman Brian Humphrey. First arriving land-based Firefighters descended a steep improvised trail to the shoreline nearly 150 feet below, to determine an adult female was beyond medical help. The woman was declared dead at the scene. Following an on-site law enforcement investigation, an LAFD helicopter crew moved the woman's remains to the cliff-top Pt. Fermin Park in a safe and dignified manner, where they were transferred to the care of Coroner's staff. A Los Angeles police spokesperson said this afternoon that it appears the woman, who was in her 40s, committed suicide. Her identity is not being released until her family is notified. The rescue operation was near the area where USC kicker Mario Danelo's body was found a little more than a year ago. Since then, at least five more people have died by falling or jumping from the cliff.
